Masjid al-Haram and the surrounding city of Makkah

The first city

Makkah

The beginning of your sacred journey — and the city where where you stay changes how often you make the walk.

Orientation

Getting your bearings

Makkah is built on hills, and this matters more than any brochure will tell you. A hotel 800 metres from the Haram can be a pleasant walk downhill and a genuinely hard climb back in the heat. It is why we quote walking minutes rather than distance alone, and why we will tell you about the gradient if you ask.

Ajyad and the Jabal Omar side put you closest, with the shortest and flattest approaches. Misfalah and the outer districts cost considerably less and rely on shuttles — a sensible trade if you would rather spend the difference on a longer stay.

The area around the Haram fills sharply in the half hour before each prayer and empties afterwards. Arriving twenty minutes early makes a real difference to how easily you find a place, particularly for Fajr and Maghrib.

  • Distance is not the whole story

Ask about the gradient and whether the route is lit and covered. Two hotels the same distance out can be entirely different walks.

  • Shuttles vary considerably

Some run every fifteen minutes from Fajr to Isha; others are far less frequent than the booking page implies. We tell you which is which.

  • Plan around the prayer schedule

Shops and restaurants near the Haram close during prayer and reopen afterwards. Meals are easier when planned around that rhythm.

  • If walking is difficult

Wheelchairs are available within the Haram complex, and distances inside are larger than they look. Arranging assistance in advance is far easier than on the day.
